Are there any professional experiences you've had that are quite unexpected compared to what you do nowadays?
UN Women UK Delegate for last 2 years - As an UN Women UK Delegate, I specialise in strategic leadership, bringing together diverse teams to propel not-for-profit organisations towards success.
Is your background more STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) or non-STEM related?
STEM - I'm an Engineer by profession and consider myself a Tech Evangelist.
Where did your professional journey start?
Hailing from a small town with restricted access and scarce female role models, I became acutely aware of the daily struggles women face across economic, social, and cultural landscapes. Rejecting the notion of conforming to societal expectations, I sought to smash the proverbial glass ceiling, and I did so with unwavering determination. My journey is fuelled by a spirit of unwavering strength and audacity, propelled by ambition, a willingness to take risks, and an unwavering belief in the power of audacious dreams.
As one of the few women in my engineering program and later, a lone management trainee among thousands of men, I consistently embraced challenges. I champion the values of dreaming big, unwavering commitment, and an unyielding spirit, refusing to let constraints define me. Instead, I actively seek out paths forward and positive solutions to overcome obstacles.
Having been the first woman in numerous positions has instilled within me a deep-seated sense of responsibility to pave the way for those who follow, to extend a helping hand as I ascend.
How did you get into tech and what motivated you?
My journey into the tech industry began with a combination of curiosity, passion, and a desire to make a meaningful impact. Growing up, I was always fascinated by technology and its potential to transform lives and societies. However, coming from a small town with limited access to resources and role models in the tech field, I initially faced challenges in pursuing my interests.
What motivated me most was the realisation of the vast opportunities that technology could unlock, not just for myself but also for others. I saw technology as a powerful tool for driving positive change, addressing societal challenges, and creating new possibilities for innovation and growth.
Have you experienced any 'career in tech' challenges / stereotypes?
I've encountered both challenges and stereotypes. Despite being one of the few women in my college's engineering program and later entering a male-dominated workforce, I remained resolute. My commitment stemmed from a profound belief in the necessity of diversity and inclusion within the tech sector. My aim was to challenge stereotypes, dismantle barriers, and facilitate more women and underrepresented groups in pursuing tech careers.
During my journey, I encountered obstacles such as facing discrimination, like being denied promotion upon revealing my pregnancy, and being assigned to work in a different country for extended periods shortly after returning from maternity leave, which was particularly challenging. Nevertheless, I embraced opportunities to learn, evolve, and enhance my skills. I actively sought mentors and allies who offered support and encouragement along the way.
My daily motivation stems from the chance to contribute to meaningful projects, collaborate with talented individuals, and spearhead innovation that positively impacts the world. I'm deeply passionate about leveraging technology to develop solutions for real-world issues and to empower individuals and communities to thrive in the digital era.
